The Colonial Ledger TOOL

The prosperity of the Western world did not emerge from ingenuity alone. It was engineered through the systematic seizure of land, the theft of labor, the dismantling of functioning economies, and the violent suppression of peoples across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and within the borders of the United States itself. What is called Western civilization was not built in Europe. It was extracted from everywhere else.

For centuries, colonial powers operated on a simple formula: remove the wealth, leave the poverty, and construct a narrative that blamed the people left behind for the conditions imposed upon them. The results were not side effects. They were the point. The underdevelopment of the Global South and the accumulation of Western capital are not two separate stories; they are the same story, told from opposite ends.

What follows is a documented record of nine colonial powers, the territories they dominated, the resources they forcibly removed, and the estimated monetary value of what those regions lost, losses measured not just in commodities and currency but in suppressed innovation, dismantled institutions, and generations denied the compounding advantages of self-determination. These are conservative figures. The full cost remains incalculable.

The wealth gap between the Global North and the Global South is not a mystery. It is an inheritance, and like all inheritances, it tells you exactly where the money came from.
